It’s no secret that the most important element for a successful construction project is a Detailed Programme to Completion (DPC). In order to come up with one, though, you need to have MS Project on your computer. It is certainly a great improvement in comparison to the old days!
Back then we had to find a roll of wallpaper or a superseded Drawing and put a program on that by hand. As you can imagine, there were certain issues with that choice:
a. The program couldn’t be detailed enough.
b. Handwriting could be quite a challenge in some cases.
c. It was almost impossible to deliver it to all the different members of the project on time.
MS Office in Construction Project Management
MS Office changed things a bit and helped a lot with some practical problems:
1. It made the e-mail communication process simpler and more efficient. Thanks to it, you can easily keep track of all communications that are sensitive.
2. MS Excel is also a great help for people in construction. There are many who use it regularly for all their sums and cash-flow forecasts.
3. Word can be really useful, as well. It lets us write letters, Minutes of Meetings, Memos, etc.
So there we have, in a few words, the basic software functions that are essential for the construction industry (MS Office and MS Project for those who can come up with a DPC).
Now all that is great and makes for a much more productive working day than when we had to do everything by hand. However, it still means we have loads of paper we have to file away and store, and that costs us time and money. Plus, of course, it costs us time out of our day if we need to send an e-mail to several people because we have to click through Contacts to get their individual e-mail addresses.

So it’s clear that this kind of software can be a vast improvement compared to the past but it’s still not enough for today’s world. What about the rest of the project’s documentation and its distribution to everyone who needs it? Do we want to continue using “snail mail” or having to wander around a site looking for the guy who needs to know? I speak for myself, but my answer is “No!”
Construction Project Management Software
Now more than ever, there’s a strong need for software that requires no more than a bit of typing and clicking. In a nutshell, we need a construction project management software that will combine the following parameters:
-The ability to cover every single bit of data that needs to be disseminated on a construction project.
-Accessibility by all the different agents of the project, from the clients down to every ganger man, or even tradesmen.
-The capacity to upload my DPC in MS Project onto it, so everyone knows what they should be doing, where and when.
-The power to monitor in real time all the different aspects of the project just by using my computer, tablet or smart phone.
-Significant time and money savings.
-The ability to store all the project data for at least 6 years so my employers don’t have to pay for an excessive amount of storage space for loads of records on paper.
So I may sound kind of demanding, but I’m actually not. A construction project is consisted of a big number of different processes the combination of which can be normally a huge challenge. On top of that, the constant progress of technology is rapidly changing the whole industry and makes the need for a solid project management software more apparent than never.
